On July 1st, the USMCA, a trade agreement that modernized the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), came into effect.

The first trade agreement had great significance, having multiplied trade relations between Mexico and Florida, making us its third largest trading partner.

As a key player, Mexico is a commercial partner for South Florida due to its geographical proximity, and the widespread and extensive commercial industries it shares with Latin America.

In 2018, our bilateral trade amounted to $ 10.8 billion. Florida imports vehicles and auto parts manufactured in Mexico, while Mexico purchased goods such as electrical equipment, home appliances and components; chemical products; and computers from Florida.

NAFTA increased Florida's exports to Mexico by 308%, generating approximately 300 thousands jobs in Florida

For Mexico and Florida maritime trade represents an opportunity to improve the objectives of the Mexican government to develop the southern region of the country. Undoubtedly, promoting a stronger port relationship in this area will serve as a catalyst for job promotion and investment on both sides.

In order to advance trade, the coordinator of ports of the Secretary of Communications and Transport and the Florida Port Council signed a letter of intent, to promote the development of its ports, improving communications and logistics. As well as, taking advantage of new technologies and strengthening institutional relations that will result in an increase of trade exchange and economic development between Mexico and Florida.

With the implementation of USMCA brings various opportunities, particularly through new areas like digital, small business, labor and environment.

We look forward to the expansion of trade particularly the well-being of the people of Mexico and Florida by the enhancement of the trilateral agreement.

USMCA’s enactment will be the beginning of a solid and fruitful relationship between Mexico and Florida.
